If you asked ten car marketing executives to guess which brand tops global automotive AI visibility, maybe one would say Hyundai. Yet that’s exactly what our data shows in Automotive AI Visibility Index — and it’s not even close.
At Opttab, we ran 9,521 prompts about cars and automotive across 12 countries, in local languages, across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Mode. Across 27,445 AI responses and 138,417 source citations, the brand that AI recommends most consistently isn’t a German luxury marque, an American EV pioneer, or a Japanese giant. It’s Hyundai.
The Korean takeover of automotive AI
Hyundai leads with a 20.6% visibility score, appearing in more than 1 in 5 AI automotive responses globally. Toyota follows at 17.5%, and Kia rounds out a Korean-brand podium at 17.2%.
Three of the top three AI automotive recommendations globally are Korean brands. Together, Hyundai and Kia alone — both from the same Hyundai Motor Group — account for over 37 percentage points of AI visibility before a single German or American brand appears.
BMW enters at #5 with 12.4%. Tesla at #6 with 12.3%. Mercedes-Benz at #9 with 8.8%. Audi at #10 with 8.2%.
For decades, German engineering brands dominated the global aspiration conversation. In AI search, Korean brands are telling a more compelling story.
Why Hyundai leads: it’s about the category
The key is what Hyundai is being recommended for. Its top AI category is Electric Vehicles — not just a segment but the most searched automotive category in 2026. Hyundai’s IONIQ series, positioned aggressively on range, value, and design, has earned genuine community acclaim — and that community sentiment flows directly into AI recommendations.
Toyota’s dominance in Used Cars tells a parallel story. People ask AI “what’s the most reliable used car?” and Toyota’s decades-long reputation for longevity gives it a commanding answer. AI isn’t just reflecting advertising; it’s reflecting collective trust built over time.
Tesla: high share of voice, lower rank than expected
Tesla holds a 4.1% share of voice in EV — the second highest SoV in the dataset — yet ranks only #6 overall with 12.3% visibility. The reason: the EV conversation is fragmented across Hyundai, Renault, Tesla, and others. No single brand owns the EV AI conversation despite it being the top automotive category. This is the market opportunity hiding in the data.

| 3 | Kia | 17.2% | 94% | 7-Seater SUVs |

| 9 | Mercedes-Benz | 8.8% | 88% | Luxury Cars |
| 10 | Audi | 8.2% | 83% | Luxury Cars |
Skoda at #8 with 93% sentiment — equal to Hyundai and Toyota — is another under-the-radar result. The value-for-money narrative that Skoda has built resonates in AI recommendations in a way that its relatively modest marketing budgets wouldn’t predict.
The intent funnel: AI is a comparison engine for car buyers
The Comparison stage leads at 1,999 prompts, followed closely by Recommendation at 1,892. Car buyers are using AI to shortlist and validate rather than just discover. The Reputation stage at 1,061 is notably high — a significant volume of people are asking AI “which car brand has the best reliability record?” or “what do people think of [brand]?”. For automotive brands, community reputation directly determines AI recommendation.
