TL; DR: To understand how AI Visibility & Agentic Commerce are relevant, you need to change the perspective. AI visibility comes first. An AI agent can only buy from a brand it has found, understood and chosen to recommend. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work that earns your place on that shortlist. Agentic commerce is what happens once you are on it. A checkout protocol or a branded agent has no value if no assistant ever surfaces your products.
An AI visibility dashboard shows how often each assistant names your brand. That number is the top of every agentic commerce funnel.

Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent does part or all of the work. It searches, compares options, builds a cart and, with the shopper’s approval, pays. The shopper talks to an assistant such as ChatGPT or Gemini instead of browsing ten blue links and a dozen tabs.
What agentic commerce is
Four open standards now shape how that works:
| Standard | Backed by | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) | OpenAI, co-developed with Stripe | Lets ChatGPT ingest structured merchant catalogs, understand inventory and surface relevant products. OpenAI says it will expand to the full shopping journey over time. |
| Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | Google, with industry partners | Open standard that covers discovery, cart, checkout and post-purchase support on surfaces like AI Mode in Search and Gemini. The retailer stays the merchant of record. |
| Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) | Secures payments made by agents through signed checkout and payment mandates, in human present and human not present modes. | |
| Model Context Protocol (MCP) | Open standard | Gives AI clients a standard way to call a business’s tools, such as product search and availability checks. |
UCP is designed to work with AP2, the Agent2Agent protocol and MCP, so these standards are layers of one stack. They share a starting assumption: the agent already knows your business exists.
The deep roots: commerce has always been a discovery game
Every commerce era has had a gate that decides which sellers get considered. Selling was never the hard part. Being found was.
| Era | Where buyers looked | What decided who got the sale |
|---|---|---|
| Physical retail | Store shelves | Shelf placement and distribution |
| Search | Google results pages | Rankings, links and SEO |
| Marketplaces | Amazon, Etsy and similar sites | Listing quality, reviews and price |
| AI answers | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity | Whether the model names you and cites your content |
| Agents | An assistant that compares and buys | Whether the agent can find, read and trust your data, then complete the order |
Each shift forced brands to relearn how to be found. The agent era adds a twist. The discovery layer and the transaction layer now sit in the same conversation. A shopper can ask for running shoes under $100, narrow the list and approve a purchase without leaving the chat.
AI visibility and GEO are the disciplines for the discovery layer of this era. Opttab defines AI visibility as a combination of presence, prominence and influence inside AI generated answers: whether you are mentioned, how often across prompts, how you are described and whether your content is cited as a trusted source. GEO is the practice of improving those outcomes. Where SEO asks how to rank higher on a results page, GEO asks how to become part of the answer. Opttab’s 10 step GEO framework lays out that workflow in detail.
Why visibility gates the transaction
Three mechanics tie visibility to agentic sales.
1. The shortlist is short. When OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025, it described the experience this way: a shopper asks for “best running shoes under $100” and ChatGPT shows the most relevant products from across the web, organic and unsponsored, ranked on relevance. For several merchants selling the same product, OpenAI said ChatGPT weighs availability, price, quality, whether the merchant is the primary seller and whether Instant Checkout is enabled. A brand outside the shortlist never reaches the cart. (Source: OpenAI)
2. Agents act on what they can read. An agent will not commit a customer’s money on facts it cannot parse. Clean titles, attributes, prices, availability and machine readable policies are what make a product safe to recommend. OpenAI’s product feed spec asks for stable product IDs, variants, availability and seller links to refund policy, shipping policy and FAQ pages. (Source: OpenAI product feed spec)
3. Citations shape recommendations. Assistants lean on sources they trust. Opttab’s AI visibility analysis surfaces which citations drive answers, including Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube, Quora and listicle articles, so you can see where your category conversation happens and where you are missing.
The result is a simple chain: visibility, then traffic, then revenue. Opttab’s FAQ frames it the same way, and it is the reason a commerce strategy that skips visibility stalls before it starts.
The agentic journey: four stages
The journey from “unknown to AI” to “sold by an agent” has four stages. Each one has a different question behind it and a different owner inside your team.
| Stage | The question | What you control | If you skip it | Opttab module |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Discoverability | Can agents reach and read us? | Crawl access, machine readable pages, product feeds | Agents never see your content | Agent Analytics, AXP / Bot Pages |
| 2. Visibility | Do assistants name us for buyer prompts? | Prompt coverage, citations, competitive position | You are readable but never recommended | AI Visibility, Prompt Volume |
| 3. Optimization | Is our content and data the best answer? | Answer first content, feed quality, policies | You appear, then lose to a clearer competitor | GEO / AEO, Content Studio |
| 4. Transaction | Can an agent complete the order safely? | Checkout path, protocols, MCP server, order support | Shoppers choose you and the order still fails | AI Commerce |
Stage 1: Discoverability
Discoverability is access. If AI crawlers cannot reach your pages, your chance of appearing in live AI results drops. Review robots.txt, CDN rules, firewall and bot protection settings, JavaScript rendering and server responses. For ChatGPT search, check that you are not blocking OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot, as covered in Opttab’s guide to ranking in ChatGPT.
Then make your pages easy to parse. Opttab’s AXP / Bot Pages create a clean Markdown layer with structured context from your public pages. It complements your main site and leaves your customer facing design and checkout where they are.
Measure it. Agent Analytics classifies crawler requests by AI model family and by activity type (training, search indexing and user action), so you can see whether your site is in the AI supply chain and in which role.
Stage 2: Visibility
Visibility is whether assistants name you when buyers ask. Build a prompt universe around real buying questions, such as best, cheapest, alternatives and “is it any good” prompts. The Prompt Generator and Prompt Volume tools help you pick the ones worth tracking.
Track a small set of metrics across models:
- Visibility score (presence): how often your brand is one of the brands named.
- Share of citations (influence): how often your pages are the sources behind an answer.
- Average position (prominence): how early you are named. Lower is better.
- Competitor visibility: who wins the prompts where you are missing.
Read presence and prominence together. A brand named once at position 1 has a perfect position score and almost no reach.
Stage 3: Optimization
Optimization closes the gaps you found in Stage 2, on two fronts.
Content. AI engines favor content that is easy to extract: clear definitions, direct answer paragraphs, comparison tables, FAQs, schema and consistent terminology. Content Studio generates GEO ready pages from your brand context and visibility gaps, and the GEO / AEO module turns gaps into actions you can publish.
Commerce data. Treat your product feed as a ranking input. Keep titles, attributes, prices, variants and stock current. OpenAI’s onboarding guide recommends sending the full feed once a day through file upload and pushing changes through the API during the day. Google builds on your existing Merchant Center feeds, and listings need the native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) attribute to show the “Buy” button in the new checkout experience. Publish shipping, returns and promotion terms in a form agents can quote.
Stage 4: Transaction
Transaction is where the agent completes the order. This is also the stage where the landscape moves fastest, so verify current terms before you build.
- ChatGPT. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025. Its current merchant page says it is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience and prioritizing discovery plus merchant owned checkout, with purchases completed on the merchant’s site or app. Product feeds remain the entry point. Onboarding is open to approved partners, and Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. (Source: ChatGPT merchants)
- Gemini and Google AI Mode. UCP powers a checkout button on eligible listings. Shoppers pay with Google Pay, and you remain the seller of record. Google lists early access for eligible products in the United States, Canada and Australia. (Source: Google Merchant Center Help) Google also announced a universal cart in May 2026 that tracks price changes and restock alerts across Search, Gemini, YouTube and Gmail.
- Payments. AP2 uses signed mandates so a merchant can verify that an agent is authorized to buy a specific checkout. That matters most when the shopper is not present at the moment of purchase.
Transaction readiness also covers service after the sale. Order status, shipment tracking and returns questions will reach agents too, which is why a business facing MCP server is useful beyond checkout.
Build your agent and distribute it
Being visible in AI search gets your brand onto the shortlist. A brand owned agent lets the assistant act on your catalog once you are there. In practice that means an MCP server that exposes tools: search products, check availability, apply policies and start a commerce action.
Opttab AI Commerce organizes this as a five step path:
- Connect your feed and raise feed health scores.
- Create your MCP server so assistants can call your business directly.
- Configure tools such as product search, availability and policies.
- Run the readiness audit (ACRA). It returns a 0 to 100 score across feeds, UCP style setup, policies, promotions, checkout and MCP maturity, and it is most useful when your MCP server is live.
- Go live and monitor queries and successful tool calls.
Then distribute where buyers already ask:
| Where | How your products or agent reach it | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Share a product feed under ACP, and connect your MCP server with the ChatGPT client configuration | Shopping is live for U.S. users. Feed onboarding is open to approved partners, and Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. |
| Gemini and Google AI Mode | Submit feeds through Merchant Center and onboard to UCP | Early access program, with eligibility limits by country and product. |
| Claude | Add your MCP server as a connector in the Claude client | Opttab provides ready to copy client configs for Claude, Cursor and ChatGPT. |
| Grok and other assistants | Track visibility and crawl activity today, and add protocol support as each platform publishes merchant specifications | Check each platform’s current merchant documentation before building. |
Two layers of discovery apply here. Assistants have to discover your brand (visibility and GEO). Shoppers and assistants also have to discover your agent (distribution and connection). A well built MCP server that nobody connects to, inside a brand that no assistant names, produces no orders.
Measure the full loop
Track one metric per stage so you can see where the funnel leaks.
| Stage | Metric | What a change tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Discoverability | AI crawler visits by bot and activity type | Whether agents can reach your pages |
| Visibility | Visibility score and share of citations by model | Whether you are on the shortlist |
| Optimization | Feed health score and prompt coverage | Whether your data and content win comparisons |
| Transaction | AI referred sessions, conversion rate and ACRA score | Whether visibility turns into revenue |
Agent Analytics connects human sessions from AI search to downstream conversions through its tracker or GA4, so you can tie visibility work to revenue.
A 30 day starting plan
Week 1: Discoverability. Audit robots.txt, CDN and firewall rules for AI crawlers. Turn on crawl analytics. Create a machine readable layer for your top pages.
Week 2: Visibility. Build a prompt set of 50 to 100 buying questions. Record a baseline across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. Run the free AI visibility report for a quick preview.
Week 3: Optimization. Fix feed quality issues. Publish answer first pages for the prompts where you are missing. Make shipping, returns and promotion terms machine readable.
Week 4: Transaction. Stand up your MCP server, run the readiness audit and apply to the programs for ChatGPT and Google. Set the metrics from the table above on a weekly review.
Opttab’s FAQ reports that most brands see early improvements within 2 to 4 weeks, with larger gains in 4 to 8 weeks. Treat that as a vendor reported range and measure your own baseline.

Path to success
Agentic commerce succeeds only when your brand, products or services are visible in AI search. Protocols, checkout buttons and branded agents all sit downstream of one event: an assistant deciding your name belongs in the answer.
The path is sequential. Optimize your visibility so assistants find and describe you accurately. Create an agent that exposes your catalog and policies through MCP and the commerce protocols. Distribute it across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok and the other assistants your buyers use. Then measure the whole loop, from crawl to cited answer to completed order.
Brands that do the first step well get the most from every later step. Brands that skip it spend on infrastructure that no agent ever calls.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AI visibility and agentic commerce?
AI visibility measures whether and how AI assistants mention and cite your brand. Agentic commerce is the ability for an agent to search, compare and buy on a shopper’s behalf. Visibility decides whether you are considered. Agentic commerce decides whether the consideration becomes an order.
Is GEO the same as agentic commerce optimization?
GEO covers content, entities, citations and technical signals that get you into AI answers. Agentic commerce optimization adds product feeds, policies, checkout and protocol readiness. GEO is the foundation, and commerce readiness builds on it.
Do I need to implement ACP and UCP both?
They serve different surfaces: ACP for ChatGPT and UCP for Google AI Mode and Gemini. Start with a clean product feed, because both build on structured catalog data, then apply to each program based on where your buyers shop.
Can a small business take part?
Yes. Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated with ChatGPT shopping, and Opttab’s Agent can by used by small businesses.
Where should an ecommerce team begin?
Run a baseline visibility check, fix crawl access and feed quality, then run a readiness audit. Opttab’s ecommerce solution page outlines the workflow.
